Late goal made draw feel like a win - Baker

After Golds took a first-half lead, former Littlehampton forward George Landais struck twice to give Dockers a 2-1 advantage. Heading into stoppage-time, Baker’s side still trailed but Gaskin headed home on 94 minutes as it ended 2-2.

Following the late leveller, Littlehampton boss Baker admitted it felt like they had taken all three points.

He said: “It was an amazing feeling for everyone at the end. The game was such a great spectacle and we deserved something from it.

“We just kept going and going, refusing to give up in the match.

“It looked as though Newhaven would have just enough, then George (Gaskin) headed us level.

“I’d probably say it was the best game I’ve been involved in this season. Both teams had some really good chances, there were four goals and it was just a pleasure to be part of.”

Golds were quick out of the blocks and ahead inside 15 minutes, Gaskin’s clever reverse pass sent Mark Goldson clear, he kept his composure and fired past Jake Buss in Dockers’ goal.

Littlehampton could well have been further ahead by the interval. Gaskin volleyed straight at Buss from all of six yards after 20 minutes, then Ryan Bell’s strike was stopped by Buss once again.

Dockers improved in the second and were handed the chance to level on the hour.

A neat turn from Lee Robinson saw him wriggle clear of Jordan Farrell before being brought down in the area. Former Golds striker Landais dispatched the spot-kick to make it 1-1.

Newhaven then took the lead for the first time three minutes later with Landais netting again.

Golds kept pushing in the final 20 minutes and they were rewarded three minutes into stoppage-time. Bell’s corner was met by Gaskin and he headed past Buss.

The draw ensures Littlehampton have taken seven points from a possible nine in their previous three games, which have all been at home.

It leaves them 14th in the table, five points clear of third-bottom Arundel and the final relegation spot with eight games to go.

Just Peacehaven & Telscombe in the bottom five picked up points on Saturday, with Baker seeing the point as a valuable one.

He added: “I’d definitely say it was a point gained. Coming back so late as we did keeps our momentum going aswell.

“It’s probably a game we’d have lost earlier in the season but credit to the players they stuck to the task, picked up a point and it will give everyone added confidence.”

Littlehampton travel to tenth-placed Horsham YMCA in the league on Saturday.
