Wick had lost their previous two games and it looked as though they were on their way to another defeat, but they struck twice in the last ten minutes to leave with a draw.

The home side took the lead on the half-hour mark as Chris Salisbury’s misplaced square pass was latched on to by Aaron Capon, and he took full advantage with a neat finish.

Ash Harper did have chances to draw the visitors level but he could not convert, and shortly after the restart United found themselves two down.

Wick tried to take a quick free kick but it failed to pay off and Uckfield broke quickly, before George Callingham rifled home a strike from the edge of the area.

Just as it looked as though United would leave with nothing, with four minutes to go Richie Boxall’s free-kick was flicked on by Kerry Hardwell to a grateful Ash Harper, who found the net from close range.

The away side sensed they could snatch a point and, in an exciting ending, they found an equaliser deep into stoppage time. Another inch-perfect set-piece delivery from Boxall found Kieron Playle-Howard at the back post and he nodded the ball home to level.

Wick & Barnham manager Jon Tucker said: “I was delighted with the point as it looked all over at one stage.

“All credit to the players as they fought right to the end and I think we deserved something out of the game.”

The draw leaves Wick tenth in the table, a point behind AFC Uckfield.
