Leaky defence spells Vase and league disaster for Chichester City

A BOLD display by Chichester ended in a 4-1 extra-time defeat at the hands of Tunbridge Wells in the FA Vase.

The Kent side scored within 20 seconds of kick-off with Perry Spackman sending in a long-range effort that dipped into the net, deceiving keeper Matt Short.

Lack of finishing prevented Tunbridge Wells extending the lead, and on 60 minutes when Chichester conjured up a goal from nowhere.

Young Spanish student David Lopez, with two defenders on him, turned brilliantly, hooked the ball into the air and smashed a volley home.

Chichester’s luck ran out during extra-time. On 94 minutes Drew Crush headed Wells into the lead and Andy McMath added two more.

Chichester were in the wars again as they lost 3-0 at home to third-placed Lancing in the Sussex League first-division on Tuesdaty night.

Scott Portas committed an early foul that led to Graham Martin converting a penalty.

Then Darren Annis steamed in to score from close range on 22 minutes after Wayne Joseph had cut in from the left.

Matt Short skied a penalty then saved one, but Annis wrapped it up with a late third for Lancing.

City go to Peacehaven on Saturday and host Shoreham next Tuesday – both in the league.
