Lewes in no mood to give up their fight for survival

Lewes manager Darren Freeman insists his determined side will scrap to the bitter end as they continue their battle to remain in the Ryman Premier League.

Freeman admitted he was angry following a last minute leveller from Grays Athletic denied Lewes a much-needed three points at the Dripping Pan last Saturday.

Lewes remain firmly rooted to the bottom on 23 points from 34 games. They are three points behind Brentwood and four points adrift from third from bottom Farnborough. VCD Athletic are still involved in the battle to avoid the drop and are fourth from bottom on 28 points.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to mid table Canvey, Freeman said: “The late goals and the last minute goals certainly have not helped us. I haven’t done the maths but if we totalled up all the points we have lost from conceding late then I’m sure we would be a couple places higher in the table.

“I was angry but I also have to say that I was pleased with the performance. The lads are playing well and expressing themselves and we are competing well against the so called better teams in the league.

“I have had managers on the phone to me after matches and they can’t believe we are at the bottom. Obviously that’s great to hear but I would rather have the points on the board.”

Tomorrow’s opponents Canvey are 14th in the table and last week they recorded a 2-1 away win at Harrow Borough.

Freeman added: “Canvey are a good side and we know we are in for a tough match against them. Once again we will go there and be positive and go for the three points. We are in a mini-league at the bottom of the table. The form table shows we are the best in that group and we have to make sure we finish top.

“I don’t think time is running out for us. We have 13 more games to play and there are plenty of points to be won. We have to keep going, keep working hard and see where it takes us.”

Josh Street, signed on loan from Eastbourne Borough is available for selection.

Freeman added: “Josh is a very talented young player and we are delighted to have him here. I know Tommy (Widdrington, Eastbourne Borough manager) thinks very highly of him and we thank them for lending Josh to us.”
