LEWES Ladies are enjoying a wonderful campaign, having lost just once in all competitions so far this season. On Sunday they won 3-0 at Basildon to put themselves into the second round of the FA Cup. A wonderful 40-yard strike on 63 minutes by left-back Steph O’Reilly opened the scoring. Substitute Clare Trafford made it 2-0 on 78 minutes, tucking the ball into the net after a great pass from O’Reilly. Then a shot from just outside the area by Tammy Waine rounded things off. Lewes manager Jacquie Agnew said: “Basildon competed well, especially in the first half, but once we managed to play our normal passing game we took more control. Things might have been different had Basildon made the most of a penalty but fortunately for us it was pulled wide.”
Monday’s Second Round draw could have been kinder for the Rookettes, who must now travel to Oxford United on Sunday, January 8, where they face a strong team that currently second in the Premier Division of the Southern Region of the Women’s Football League. Lewes Ladies have also shown tremendous support for the Lewes FC Support & Save scheme. Every one of them has signed up to become a shareholder of the football club. See today’s Sussex Express to see a picture of them proudly showing off their share certificates.
