From the back pages, July 13: England stand their ground as umpire error proves catching

Ian Bell has always been known as a batsman with a pure sense of timing, and yesterday he chose a prime moment to make his most significant Ashes contribution in a home Test match. Kevin Pietersen dismissed suggestions that Stuart Broad had breached the spirit of cricket by standing his ground to capitalise on the latest umpiring howler to mar this dramatic Trent Bridge Test, insisting that England “play hard and very, very fair”. Pietersen’s appearance at the end-of-play round of media interviews was surprising enough – the first time he has done so without having scored a century in more than a year – and his staunch defence of Broad would have seemed even more remarkable when relations between the pair were icy last summer. The reintegration process would seem to have worked. (The Guardian)

Stuart Broad controversially refused to walk after being caught at slip to leave Australia furious on the third day of the first Investec Ashes Test at Trent Bridge. The England bowler clearly edged Ashton Agar to Michael Clarke via Brad Haddin’s gloves but he was given not out by umpire Aleem Dar and did not leave the field. (Daily Mail)
