It all comes down, then, to one game. A home fixture against West Ham United, a week from today, that will decide Newcastle United’s survival. Coach John Carver described it as one of the biggest games in the club’s history, in what we can only assume was a desperate attempt to inject some small measure of enthusiasm into his squad. For if next week’s game is enormous, then so was this. And Newcastle, quite frankly, were abysmal. (The Telegraph)

Tottenham 2 Hull City 0: This was not a do-or-die defeat for Hull City, more a case of the drip, drip effect of the torture of keeping up with the other relegation candidates. At least there was good news for Steve Bruce’s side in the form of the result at Loftus Road. Newcastle’s defeat keeps alive the prospect that Hull might stay up on goal difference, but they need to craft a win over Manchester United next weekend. (The Times)
