Loft off as Rye crash

Rye United endured a night to forget as they were dumped out of the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup.

The Quarterboys lost 4-0 at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe and captain Shaun Loft is likely to receive a three-match ban after being sent-off.

Without the likes of Ryan Alexander, Andy Atkin and Jack Franklin, Rye started slowly and fell behind in the 10th minute when Ryan McBride controlled a ball over the top and lifted over Ollie Jones in the home goal.

Jones went off injured just before the half-hour and was replaced by Josh Willis. Rye switched things around at half time with Loft going up-front and Sam Adams slotting in at centre-half.

Peacehaven doubled their lead within five minutes of the restart via a fine left-foot shot from Wes Tate into the far corner. Tate, who played for Rye last season, then stroked home a Wes Millis cross in the 67th minute.

The influential McBride volleyed his second and Peacehaven’s fourth in the 74th minute, and Rye’s misery was complete when Loft was shown a straight red card for elbowing Joe Dryer eight minutes later.

Rye have now been knocked out of three cup competitions this season, all of them by a four-goal margin. See Friday’s Rye Observer for a full report and reaction.
