Lucy’s loving life with Brighton

Albion have made a unbeaten start to life in the FA Women’s Premier League South Division this season.

A 6-1 win over C&K Basildon on Sunday was their fifth win in six league games and they sit top of the table, having scored 18 goals and conceded just one.

Winger Somes, who is from Durrington and attended Worthing College, admitted everyone at the club has their sights on the title and gaining promotion to the Women’s Super League.

She said: “We are aiming to go on and win the title. Every single one of the girls wants to achieve the same and we are all set on that.

“We have come a long way as a team in the past few seasons and it would be great for us if we could go on to clinch the title.”

The 21-year-old first joined Albion at the age of eight following a successful trial, before leaving aged 12.

Somes then had spells with Worthing Minors boys’ side, Littlehampton and East Preston ladies before returning to Brighton in 2011.

She admitted Albion are one of the more fortunate women’s teams across the country as they train three days a week at Brighton’s state-of-the-art American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

Somes feels the support that Albion give boosts the squad and said: “The set-up is so supportive of us here and very professional.

“I really enjoy it and it’s really good. We are lucky enough to train at the training ground with the amazing facilities on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

“We are also granted access to the media/analysis room and that gives us the chance to watch back the previous match. The physio and medical rooms are also available to us, which is fantastic.”

With a couple of teams now professional in the WSL, Somes is hoping that one day she can become full-time with Albion and said: “I’d love to be able to go professional in the women’s game one day.

“Hopefully, I will be able to achieve that with Albion, if the club could enable that at some stage.

“I feel, with the support that we get, it could be possible at some point in the future.

“A couple of teams in the top league are and it would be unbelievable for me to one day say I’m a professional footballer.”
