Mad 15-minute spell costs Wick defeat away to Heath

A MAD 15-minute spell in the first half where they conceded three goals cost Wick Football Club dearly in a defeat at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.

It was Wick’s third defeat since the turn of the year, in which time they have also recorded two wins and a draw.

Wick began the match brightly and could have gone ahead in the opening 10 minutes but Stan Elder’s shot went wide, before an awful spell at the end of the first half saw the hosts put them to the sword.

Jake Holmes gave Heath the lead just after the half-hour mark as he finished well from eight yards, and shortly afterwards Damon Aston doubled the hosts’ advantage, leaving Wick with a mountain to climb.

It was to get worse before the end of the half, though, and it came in controversial fashion.

Joe Matthews looked to have headed Noel Etherington’s shot off the line but the linesman awarded the goal despite there being a crowd of players in the penalty area, which meant Heath went into the break with a three-goal lead.

However, Wick were not completely demoralised and they came out fighting after the restart and Michael Frangou was perhaps unfortunate not to find the net with one of his two chances.

The winning margin perhaps flattered the home side, and Wick joint manager Dave Berkowitz believed his team could have got something out of the game on a different day.

He said: “We were in the match for most of the game but that 15-minute spell before half-time killed us.

“On another day, we might have got a draw but it wasn’t to be.”
