The U’s slipped 11 points off the pace after losing 2-1 at home to leaders Peacehaven & Telscombe last weekend, although they do have two games in hand and exactly half of their league matches still to play.

Maggs said: “Most certainly (we can still win the league). Everyone’s talking about an 11-point gap. We’ve got two games in hand - that becomes five points.

“We’ve got to play them (Peacehaven) last away game of the season I think it is - becomes two points. What’s two points in this league? A draw - so there’s everything to play for.

“Until Peacehaven slip up, it’s not in our hands any more. But it’s ridiculous to say this and that when we’re only halfway through the season.”

Maggs is eager to start building some momentum as United prepare to host Herne Bay tomorrow night (Monday) following the postponement of yesterday’s scheduled trip to Crawley Down Gatwick. “We need to go on a little run again,” he said.
