Maggs: We had no luck

The U’s conceded a scruffy goal in either half to go down 2-0 in the channel islands, ending their nine-match unbeaten run in Ryman Football League Division One South.

United manager Maggs said: “Were they better than us? No. Did they have a bit more rub of the green or luck? Yes. We had no luck at all. It wasn’t a marvellous game, but one side had better fortune than the other.

“It wasn’t that we were bad and they were good. Overall we were as good as them, but the goals we gave away were two give-aways. The first one we had two or three chances to get the ball away and the ball ends up in the net, and the second goal was an own goal.”

Although not the first time United have ever played off the English mainland (previous opponents have included Newport IoW), it could well have been the first time the club has ever travelled to a match by air.

“The trip was very well organised,” Maggs added. “The flights were good, no problem, you get picked up at the airport and the hotel was good. They do it quite well Guernsey. It was an experience, but I would’ve liked to have coming back with something.”

Having flown to Guernsey, Sompting-based Maggs will virtually be able to walk to United’s next match away to sixth-placed Worthing on Saturday. Second-placed United are two points behind leaders Leatherhead with a game in hand.

United’s under-21s and under-18s are both in action tonight. The older side will visit Leatherhead in the Ryman U21 League South Division and the younger outfit will host Bognor Regis Town in the Ryman Youth League South Division. Both matches will kick-off at 7.45pm.
