Major blow to Rye title hopes

Rye United’s title hopes suffered a major setback with defeat on Saturday.

The Quarterboys’ seven-match winning run in Sussex County Football League Division One came to an abrupt end with a 3-0 loss away to Pagham.

All the goals came during the second half and to make matters worse, results elsewhere went against Rye too with Three Bridges and Lancing both winning.

Although they remain top of the table, Rye are now just two points ahead of Bridges having played two more games and three above Lancing having played one more.

Sidley United, meanwhile, look set to beat last season’s placing of 13th in the same division after receiving a walkover at home to bottom club Chichester City.

Bexhill United’s excellent form continued with a 2-1 win away to Midhurst & Easebourne in Division Two. Dominic Clarke scored both goals to make it 21 for the season.

Westfield suffered their first defeat since the end of January with a 2-1 reverse at home to champions East Preston despite going ahead through Kevin Bird’s header.

Little Common were without a fixture and have slipped to the foot of the table after relegation rivals Seaford Town and Oakwood drew with each other 0-0.

Full reports on the matches involving Rye, Bexhill and Westfield will appear in Friday’s Observers.
