Peacehaven supporters and volunteers braved the low temperatures today in a valiant bid to get their Sports Park pitch ready for tomorrow night’s John O’Hara League Cup clash with Ringmer.

The game had to be postponed from Tonight’s (Tuesday) original scheduled date because of the snow and frost that wiped out Saturday’s fixture programme – and did for all of the other scheduled county league games tonight.

But the cup tie was put back 24 hours to tomorrow night give the pitch a chance to be made fit to play.

We understand that, ironically, the recent rain may scupper all of the Tye volunteers’ best efforts at getting tomorrow’s game on. But they have at least given the game a chance of going ahead – and their work today was hailed by the club as a ‘marvellous effort’.

Following a Twitter appeal by Peacehaven FC on Monday, helpers turned out to brave the freezing weather, and volunteers worked throughout Tuesday to help clear the pitch.

On Monday Peacehaven tweeted: “We will be clearing the pitch tomorrow. If you can spare an hour in Peacehaven it would be appreciated.”

Then, on Tuesday (today) morning the club tweeted a pic (left) entitled: ‘830 pitch clearing starts!’ The picture showed the Tye pitch under a heavy layer of snow.

But later in the day, around late afternoon, the club published another pic entitled: ‘Pitch now!’ showing just how much work had been put in to clearing the playing surface. Most of the snow had been removed and there were visible signs of the effort put in throughout the day.

Peacehaven then added: “Thanks to everyone for all the help today!”

And at the end of the day, the Tye outfit published a story on their website titled ‘Human Snow Plough’ where the club said: “Big thanks to everyone today who acted as a human snow plough to clear our pitch of snow...”

A picture published there showed even more snow had been cleared from the pitch.

The club this evening told the Sussex Express: “We had between four and nine people over the day. The pitch is just a bit wet at the moment but should be fine for Saturday. However, the rain may curtail tomorrow v Ringmer.

“But without everyone’s hard work today there would have been no chance of tomorrow’s game being on, so it was a marvellous effort.

“It also means we should be able to host a game on Saturday as well as Wednesday’s visit of Hastings United (in the Tye’s big Sussex Senior Cup clash).”

That Saturday game would be the Peacehaven Reserves against Bexhill United in Reserve Section (East). The First Team will hopefully see their FA Vase game go ahead away at Larkhall Athletic.

Ringmer FC today showed their appreciation for their Peacehaven colleagues by tweeting: ‘Huge task by the lads at Peacehaven to strip their pitch of snow for our match on Wed night. Thank you all for your time & effort.’

The Blues had earlier tweeted: “22 Jan JOH Match v Peacehaven postponed at Ringmer. However this match will be played at Peacehaven on Wed 23rd Jan 7:45, all being well.”
