STORRINGTON Football Club’s new boss Peter Matthews is relishing the challenge that awaits him.

Matthews, who was appointed earlier this week, will lead Swans in Sussex County League Division 2 next season.

Swans finished second from bottom last season but avoided relegation as Rustington and Westfield were relegated after they failed to meet ground grading requirements.

Former Ferring boss Matthews takes over from Nigel Dyer, who is now Storrington’s chairman.

Pete Christodoulou and John Gregory will work alongside Matthews, who said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the committee and Nigel Dyer for appointing me into this role.

“A number of applications were submitted, so it’s great that I have been chosen to take charge. The hard work starts now, though, and it is up to me to make sure I bring some flesh blood in, as well as keeping some of the current team.

“This is a job that I am looking forward too and I can’t wait to get started now.”

Matthews has previously managed Arundel’s youth and reserve teams and also had a successful spell in charge of Ferring, who he guided to a second-placed finish in 2013-14.

On his long-term aim with Swans, Matthews said: “The long-term aim here is to get the club into Division 1.

“Obviously, last season was not one of their best, so the aim for me is to turn results around and make sure that we take this club as far as we can.

“I managed Ferring and had a really good time there but, because of their ground, we could not go up.

“Storrington has some really good facilities and, if we can regain that success I had at Ferring, hopefully, we can move on as a club and I can’t wait to get started.”

Dyer added: “After a difficult season, it was important to bring in a fresh face, with lots of enthusiasm to get the club away from the wrong end of the table next season.

“The club welcomes Peter to Swans HQ and, together, we will work hard to bring success to the club in future seasons.”
