McLeod strike earns Pompey victory

Izale McLeod struck the only goal of the game as Pompey earned a scrappy 1-0 win at Aldershot Town in their latest pre-season friendly.

The former Barnet striker, who is on trial with the Blues in the hope of earning a permanent contract, produced a clever dinked finish after latching on to fellow triallist Luke Rodgers’ through ball in the seventh minute for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

While there were precious few chances throughout the rest of the friendly fixture for either side, Pompey fielded a patchy side containing several more triallists, a clutch of youngsters and high-earners Tal Ben Haim and Liam Lawrence.

Ben Haim was roundly booed by Pompey fans over his outstanding contract wrangle as boss Michael Appleton’s hand remains tied in attempting to rebuild his squad.

But it will have given the players a boost in confidence to earn a win in front of more than 1,000 travelling and vocal Pompey fans.
