A second half double blast from Blly Medlock gave United a very good 2-0 win at home to a Guernsey side which was unbeaten in its previous nine Ryman Football League Division One South matches.

There wasn’t much to choose between the teams during the first half, but United bossed the second period and were good value for a victory which took them past the 50-point mark for the season.

United started brightly at a foggy Pilot Field and fashioned the game’s first genuine chance midway through the first half when Sam Adams’ first time flick from a great low cross by Matt Cruttwell was diverted wide by Guernsey goalkeeper Chris Tardif.

Guernsey started to enjoy more possession and posed an increasing threat as the half wore on. Debutant United goalkeeper Harry Girling made a good save from Ross Allen and seconds later did well to prevent Sam Cole’s miscued clearance going into his own net.

Girling then pulled off another decent stop from Craig Young’s angled drive, while Ollie Rowe and and Medlock had low shots saved at the other end as the first half ended goalless.

United had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 52nd minute. Simon Johnson released Adams down the left with a lovely ball and Adams delivered an excellent cross which Medlock headed over with the goal at his mercy. Medlock then fired over with his left foot after Sam Cruttwell’s forward flick made its way through to him.

The same player did give United the lead in the 60th minute thanks to a huge slice of good fortune. A Guernsey defender’s attempted clearance struck Medlock and flew into the bottom corner from outside the box.

United doubled their advantage with a splendid goal on the counter-attack six minutes later. The impressive Adams picked up Zac Attwood’s clearance and released Chris Cumming-Bart on the right. Cumming-Bart’s low centre was perfect for Medlock to sweep home.

Tardif pulled off good saves low down to keep out Attwood’s volley, plus shots from the edge of the box by man of the match Medlock and substitute Tyrell Richardson-Brown. Adams also shot wide at the far post following a good cross by Medlock.

At the other end Girling had very little to do after the break as United looked solid in defence to keep a clean sheet against a Guernsey team which went into the game as the division’s leading scorers.
