Meet Drummy - the former Arsenal and Chelsea coach

Dermot Drummy has been handed his first managerial role at Crawley Town - but the former Arsenal and Chelsea coach already has a wealth of football experience.

The 55-year-old’s playing career started as a young midfielder at Arsenal, although he never made a first team appearance for the Gunners.

He did feature for Blackpool in the Football League on loan during the 1979-80 season, before playing for a host of non-League clubs.

He featured in a player-manager role at Ware, before becoming a youth coach at his boyhood club Arsenal midway through the 1990s.

Youth talents at the club in that time included Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Wojciech Szczesny, Ashley Cole, David Bentley and Cesc Fabregas.

He made the short trip across London to Chelsea in January 2009 where he career flourished, starting off as manager of the academy.

He led them to their first FA Youth Cup in the 2009-10 season and became youth team manager in 2011, which was then replaced the under-21 team which went on the win the under-21 Premier League.

Young promising players for the successful team in that spell included Ryan Bertrand, Michael Essien and Romelu Lukaku.

Drummy was made international head coach at Chelsea in 2014, but left the club a year later in search of a position in senior management.

Keen to emulate the rise of Brendan Rodgers and Paul Clement from Chelsea academy coaches to top managerial roles.

Drummy previously held talks with Brazilian side Bangu regarding the possibility of him taking over as manager.

But it seems as though he was being lined up by new Reds owner Ziya Eren as Crawley Town boss in recent weeks with his appointment was confirmed just two days after Mark Yates’ departure.

Drummy certainly has the coaching credentials and an experienced CV of working with young talents and seems an exciting appointment for the new chapter as Crawley.
