Michalik poised for Blues bow

Lubomir Michalik is pencilled in for his Pompey debut in tonight's visit of Swindon.

The Slovakian defender signed on a one-month deal at the end of last week but didn’t feature against Walsall.

He is now set to be given the nod to line up alongside Josh Thompson in defence, with Kevin Long ruled out with a back problem.

Gabor Gyepes could also make the squad, having yesterday returned to training well ahead of schedule following an ankle injury.

Yet Appleton has revealed it is Michalik who is poised to start against the Robins.

He said: ‘As long as Lubo didn’t get any reactions or injuries overnight I am expecting him to play.

‘I would have liked him to get a little bit more football under his belt but needs must. He is someone we seriously have to think about throwing in.

‘He’s a big unit, heads the ball well, is strong and experienced in League One.

‘Gabor trained yesterday morning, which was a bonus. If he doesn’t get any reaction then obviously he is someone we would also seriously consider.

‘We will just have to wait to see the situation.’
