The 25-year-old from Worthing, who also played for Rebels at the start of his career, helped Shrewsbury to a 1-0 win at Cheltenham Town, which sealed a top-two finish in League Two.

Shrewsbury, who have won eight of their last nine games, are still in the hunt for the league title. They trail leaders Burton Albion by two points with one game left to play.

On his first season in the Football League, after joining from Kidderminster, Demetriou said: “It’s been brilliant and I couldn’t have asked for any more.

“The club had 17 new players join in the summer but we gelled quickly, got off to a good start and now we’ve still got a chance of winning the championship. The squad has worked hard all season and, hopefully, things will go for us this Saturday.

“If Burton win on Saturday, then they’ll deserve to be champions. We’ve won eight of our last nine games but every time we come off the pitch and check their score, they’ve won as well. We’ve done all we can, so now we’ll be looking to win on Saturday and hope that they slip up.”

Demetriou has made 48 appearances in all competitions this season, mainly at left wing-back but also with a few games at left-back. He has also chipped in with three goals and said: “I’ve played 41 league games and won promotion and, if someone had offered me that at the start of the season, I’d have bitten their hand off.

“I’ll look forward to playing in League One now and we’ll look to finish as high as we can.”

After representing England C while a non-league player with Kidderminster, more international honours could be around the corner for Demetriou.

Cyprus have enquired about the eligibilty of the left-sided player and Demetriou said: “I’ve given them all of the relevant information but I’m not sure if I’m eligible or not.

“If I am and they’re interested, then I’m going to have a decision to make.”
