Midhurst outwit Wick to record best win of season

Taking on Wick, a team who had lost only two league games, presented Midhurst with a challenge - but they responded to magnificently with a sound display and a 4-2 win.

After 15 minutes of the Sussex League division-two fixture, Wick were celebrating a goal but a linesman indicated offside.

Wick forward Jamie Ford had to leave the field for treatment after a collision with new Midhurst signing midfielder Nazir Idri. As half-time approached, Gary Buller was on hand to put Midhurst ahead when Wick’s Tim Lester misjudged a clearance.

Wick were strong in midfield and on 52 minutes Jamie Ford evaded Nathen Castleton and keeper Paul Williamson to level the score. Wick started to put the pressure on Midhurst and Williamson had one of his best games for some time.

Liam Dreckman laid on a pass to enable Steve Boston to volley home Midhurst’s second.

Both sides had players shown yellow cards.

Manager Trevor Waller sent on Malcolm Page in place of the injured Ollie Rowland but Wick levelled again as Callum Cutler scored from close range.

In the final ten minutes, referee Nicholas Baker awarded a penalty to Wick and Williamson rounded off his excellent afternoon by saving it.

To top the day, the club’s reserves managed an emphatic 6-2 victory at home to Ferring. Luke Sheldrick led the way with an hat-trick.
