Mixed fortunes for Sidley & Rye

Sidley United picked up their first home league win of the season with a 2-0 victory against Redhill on Saturday.

Two Dominic Clarke goals from Jason Taylor assists gave Sidley a hard-earned victory over Redhill side which went into the Sussex County Football League Division One fixture in the top four.

Sidley took less than two minutes to open the scoring as Clarke netted from Taylor’s left wing corner. The Blues came under a lot of pressure in the second half, but defended well and debutant goalkeeper Greg Nessling made three good saves. Against the run of play, Clarke turned in Taylor’s left wing cross for Sidley’s second goal in the 78th minute.

Elsewhere, Rye United missed the chance to draw level on points with leaders East Preston after losing by the same score away to an in-form Horsham YMCA side.

Andy Atkin struck the crossbar as Rye were on top before YM took a 25th minute lead through a well-taken Scott Wason goal. Rye went two-down in the 39th minute when a throw-in bounced no less than three times in the away penalty box before Elliot Romain tapped home at the far post.

The usually deadly Sam Adams had a penalty saved five minutes into the second half and Ryan Alexander hit the crossbar 10 minutes from time as Rye kept pressing, but it wasn’t to be. Full reports and reaction to both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
