Moore double helps Heath to much-needed three points

Broadbridge Heath were made to work hard in atrocious conditions at The Leisure Centre for their first league win in seven weeks.

The Bears lifted themselves to 11th in the Premier Division with their fifth victory of the season as they beat Worthing United 2-0.

Despite impressive recent cup successes, Steve Painter’s side had suffered a disappointing hammering by Eastbourne United last time out.

They had also drawn with Hassocks and lost to Newhaven since beating Arundel at the end of September.

But with Painter stating last week that league points are their priority, Ollie Moore’s double got them back on track.

Heath started well and came close in the opening minutes through Tiago Andrade, whose overhead kick from a Tim Martin cross flew inches wide and again when another Martin cross to the far post was headed just wide by Stuart Chester.

The visitors had their chances as well, Dean Gilmour hit a low right-footed shot from the edge of the box just wide of Michael Chester’s right post and the Heath stopper was in action to twice block goal attempts as the game flowed from end to end.

In the 20th minute Tiago Andrade forced the Worthing keeper Matt Evans into a superb fingertip save, but he could do nothing a minute later to stop a thunderbolt shot from 30 yards by Ollie Moore which flew into the net.

The visitors came back but were caught on the counter-attack when Andrade played into the path of Moore who ran through and shot past Evans, despite him getting a hand to it.

Evans denied Heath a third with a good save from Martin’s goal-bound shot and Piers McDermott should have done better with an effort which he hit high over the cross bar.

The conditions worsened in the second half with driving gale force wind and rain adding to the slippery, waterlogged surface and the Heath players found the going tough.

The visitors took advantage of the wind on their backs by pressing forward, but the Heath defence, marshalled by Andy Howard, stood firm and the game fizzled out with Heath moving up one place in the table to 11th position.
