The 30-year-old took over at the start of the season and admitted he found it a lot tougher than he thought it would be as Blues finished second from bottom in County League Division 2.

Morten said: “It was very hard but I’m pleased and proud that I saw it out until the end of the season.

“It would have been nice to have stayed up but, sadly, it didn’t pan out that way.

“I took the job on at the start of the season as nobody else was going to do it and I wanted to keep the boys together.

“I didn’t realise how hard it was going to be, though, especially when you have to tell one of your mates they’re dropped and not going to play at the weekend.

“I tip my hat to anyone who manages as it really does take over your life. Wayne Flynn and Darryl Lineham were both brilliant helping me out and made my life a bit easier but I’m looking forward to just getting back to playing again now.”

Blues are now looking for a new first-team manager and a new reserve team boss. Anyone interested can call Rustington chairman Frank Sumner on 07710 366914.
