Mullets end losing run with win in RUR Cup

ARUNDEL Football Club ended their three-game losing run and won for just the second time in seven games on Tuesday evening when they progressed in the Sussex RUR Cup with a 1-0 win at East Grinstead.

Mullets did it the hard way as well. They had asked for the game to be called off earlier in the week, owing to an injury crisis, unavailablity and a 7.15pm kick-off, which meant leaving Arundel in rush hour at 5pm, but that request was turned down.

That meant Arundel travelled to the game with a squad of 13, which included the injured Josh Biggs and boss Gary Wheatcroft, who were both on the bench.

Then, keeper Rhys Griffiths was involved in a car accident on the way to a game and was too shaken up to play, so the injured Ben O’Connor, who had gone over to watch, stepped in and went in goal.

Despite seemingly having everything against them, Arundel went ahead after just 10 minutes when Scott Tipper fired home from 10 yards after Dave Walker headed down Lewis Hamilton’s free kick.

Grinstead’s Dan Luchford missed a great chance to equalise when he headed wide moments later and Hamilton and Howard Neighbour went close to a second for Arundel before half-time.

O’Connor made an excellent save to deny Richard Sinden on 55 minutes but, from then on, it was Arundel who looked the more likely to add to the scoring.

Rob Wimble hit a post and Tipper fired wide as Mullets progressed to the delight of assistant boss Simon Butler, who said: “The boys were absolutely brilliant and I was so proud of all of them.

“They needed a pick-me-up after the recent results and this gives us something to build on.”

Wimble and Carl Turney both played their last game for Mullets as they are both now joining local rivals Wick.

Arundel host Peacehaven in the league on Saturday and hope to have Gary Norgate, Rory Biggs, Josh Biggs and Rob Grove all back.

ARUNDEL: O’Connor; Hall, Sneller, D.Walker, Gardner; Hamilton, Burton, Neighbour, Turney; Tipper, Wimble. Subs: J.Biggs (Neighbour 87), Wheatcroft.
