Mullets exit FA Cup against Rye

THE magic of The FA Cup was short lived for Arundel Football Club as they exited the competition on Tuesday night – missing out on £1,500 prize money after they lost to Rye United.

In an entertaining and feisty replay at Mill Road, just three days after the two sides had drawn 0-0 at the same ground with ten-man Rye hanging on for the last 20 minutes, United hit back from 1-0 down at half-time to book their spot in the preliminary round against Chipstead.

In truth, Rye could and should have at least been level at half-time as they spurned a whole host of chances in the first half.

It was Scott Tipper, however, who notched the only goal of the first 45 minutes as he opened his body and expertly angled a low cross from Dave Herbert across goal into the corner of the net after just five minutes.

Rye’s threats finally of an equaliser came to fruition within three minutes of the restart as a low dangerous ball in from Berry was turned into the net by a bundle of defenders under pressure from Evan Archibald.

On 65 minutes, Rye went ahead as the threatening Archibald finally got his rewards after a good move and another ball in from the right flank.

Arundel boss Brett Torode said: “I feel for the club with the chance of £1,500 to win, that’s disappointing, but the lads came out and gave everything and I cannot fault them.”
