Mullets’ win knocks Ringmer off the top

A SECOND-HALF double from Mike Huckett gave Arundel Football Club an impressive 2-0 victory away to Ringmer on Saturday.

The home side were top of the County League Division 1 table going into the match, but the midfielder, returning to the side following injury, struck twice in nine minutes to help the Mullets on their way to victory.

Both teams started well but it was Ringmer who had the better of the first-half chances, and the visitors had goalkeeper James Fernandes to thank for two superb saves to keep the scores level going into the break.

After the restart, Arundel began to dominate proceedings and they deservedly went in front midway through the second half.

James Wotherspoon, who had an excellent game throughout, beat his man before squaring for Huckett to finish easily from six yards out.

That seemed to give the Mullets real impetus and purpose as they went about trying to find the killer second goal, and it came shortly afterwards, via Huckett again.

The ex-Worthing man’s trickery in the box was too good for the Ringmer defender, who brought him down, and Huckett stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick with 15 minutes to go.

It could have got even better for the away side as, in the dying stages, substitute Luke Jearum, making his debut after joining from Storrington, had a decent chance in the box but he could only stab the ball over the bar.

Nevertheless, it was a fine performance and result, and Arundel manager Brett Torode was full of praise for his players.

He said: “It was a cracking win and I’m very pleased.

“We played really well and worked hard, and we finally got a little bit of good fortune which we haven’t had recently.”

Arundel’s match at Lingfield on Tuesday was postponed owing to a snow-covered pitch.

Mullets entertain Peacehaven on Saturday and then host Selsey on Tuesday.
