New-boy Agyemang targets long Pompey stay

The powerful front man arrived at Fratton Park on Friday and was one of three debutants against Bournemouth.

They couldn’t help Guy Whittingham’s side avoid a 19th game without a win.

That equals a club record set in the 1975-76 campaign under Ian St John.

It was also a record-equalling ninth loss on the spin.

But alongside John Akinde in attack, Agyemang gave an encouraging display.

The 32-year-old is currently out of favour at Stevenage and joined Pompey on an initial month’s loan.

But with his contract up in the summer, he would consider a permanent Pompey deal.

He said: ‘Wiggy (Steve Allen) is an old friend from Wimbledon and got in touch with me and said to come down to get some games as I wasn’t playing at Stevenage.

‘I was out and was just trying to get my fitness back, then I had a slight hamstring and played one game and it set me back.

‘The manager brought some new players in and because he did that has to play them, so it is going to be hard for me to start more games at Stevenage.

‘Everything depends on how I do here at the moment.

‘My contract with Stevenage is until the end of the season and it has been good down there.

‘Who knows? I could end up staying here.

‘Things could turn around here.

‘I just want to start scoring some goals, get my confidence up and help the team.

‘I have seen what is going on, the fans are giving the team amazing support but they just need a bit of luck.

‘Hopefully me and John (Akinde) can cause other teams a lot of problems and get some goals to move us up the table.

‘I have been around a while but still feel good, so I’m just looking forward to playing more games now.

‘I am not in the Stevenage team so would like to stay here and play football.’

In 1975, from September 6 to December 12, Pompey failed to win in a club record 19 matches in all competitions.

That included a run of nine successive defeats – equalling another club record.

Pompey have the chance to avoid breaking those unwanted marks at Hartlepool tomorrow night.

Agyemang added: ‘If we nicked it 1-0 on Saturday it would have been an amazing result.

‘If it had been 0-0 that would have been a good result as well.

‘They said to me before the game we have been letting in sloppy goals and that is what is killing us.

‘It was a sloppy goal which saw Bournemouth break the deadlock on Saturday.

‘Hopefully we can stop that happening in the next game and use our energy to get a win. I did see positives.’
