New Clymping boss Williamson hoping to challenge

NEW Clymping Football Club boss Mike Williamson is hoping to turn the club’s fortunes around next season and get them challenging in County League Division 3.

Williamson, who took charge at Wick at the end of last season, admitted that Clymping chair-lady Kay Weller and husband Gavin, who is secretary, talked him into the job with their passion for their club.

The Bognor-based manager could not commit to Wick next season after being given a games maker role at the Olympics – working in the south east training camp, where it is rumoured Team GB will be based. He then will be involved pitchside in the Paralympic football tournament, cutting down the time he can spend working with a club at the start of the season.

It is for this reason he could not commit to what he felt was a more-involved job at Wick and left on good terms, but then had a call from Clymping, where he felt he could juggle his commitments.

Williamson said: “Because of my involvement, I felt I couldn’t commit full-time to Wick, it wouldn’t have been fair. It would have taken a lot more work than Clymping as here there are three teams, reserves and youth, both with managers, and I’ll have a management team with me here, too.

“They’re good people, Gavin and Kay, what I would call a breath of fresh air into football. They remind me of back 10 years ago, when people didn’t play for the money, but the love of the game – they really talked me round.”

Williamson, who is hoping not to miss any actual games, will have Marc Hilton, who assisted him at Wick, and Paul Bird on his management team as well as others still to be confirmed.

On his aims, he said: “They finished third from bottom in Division 3 last year, but, hopefully, the team I can get together can be challenging.”
