No holding Hassocks but there’scontrasting defeats for Heath

Hassocks made it 11 league wins out of 11 as they saw off the challenge of third-placed South Park on Sunday.

Goals by Emma Wickham (2), Layla Allan, Lottie Arnold and Katie Harding completed a 5-0 win.

Meanwhile, there was no such joy for Haywards Heath as they lost to the only goal away to Kent side Meridian.

The freezing wind and constant sleet set the scene for a somewhat dour game of few chances. But while it was not a day for skill or trickery, both sides worked tirelessly.

The only goal came from a mistake in the 85th minute when a Heath defender got caught upfield and from the resulting overlap, Meridian gave the keeper no chance.

Recent signing Rosh Nellis made her debut and showed she will be an asset to the club, and captain Jen Weller was Heath’s player of the match.

What a contrasting game it was for Heath’s 2nds as they, amazingly, conceded seven goals in a disastrous 13-minute spell in the second half to go down 5-9 at home to Dorking.

Their goals came from Sian Ford-Hunt (2), Claudia Vogel, Jinny Ursell and Cath Diffey in a game where Heath felt they were the better side for most of the time.

They were 2-0 up after only 13 minutes, both goals via the woodwork, but were pegged back within 10 minutes. That is how it stayed until early in the second half when the hosts went back in front.

But then came that catastrophic 13 minutes although credit Heath for finally collecting themselves to reply twice.

Player of the match was Nicole Webley and scoring in her first outing since October was Diffey.
