Rebels host the League Two side in the first-ever game on the 3G pitch and it will also be the first game which joint managers Elphick and Jon Meeney take charge of.

Elphick said: “I’m really looking forward to this game now. It’s great to be at this club and the ambition they have is great.

“Tuesday will mark the first game of a new era and we want to do well. We will be hoping to put smiles on the fans’ faces in this game and in the coming season.”

Elphick feels it is important not to expect too much from his team in the game and said: “Obviously, being a Football League side, Northampton will be a big test.

“It is important to remember that it’s a pre-season friendly. I will be making sure the players play the right amount of minutes and get used to being back in a game situation after the summer break.”

New signings Tony Nwachukwu and the returning Steve Metcalf could feature for Rebels, who will also include trialists, Matt Axell, who was with the club last season, and Sibu Muwanga.
