Nyetimber Pirates can't hit Barn's door

There were mixed fortunes for our featured sides in the latest round of Chichester and West Sussex Sunday League action.

Old Barn 3 Nyetimber Pirates 0

Division one

Last year’s divison-one runners-up Old Barn ran out comfortable winners over the champions, the Nyetimber Pirates, as they did battle at Arun Leisure Centre.

Pirates were without six of last week’s FA Sunday Cup team through injury and handed debuts to goalkeeper Gav Jones and striker Anders Wyatt.

Old Barn took the lead when nice play gave Woolston a simple tap-in. Ralph Cox could have equalised for the Pirates but his strike cannoned off the post.

Barn doubled their lead just before the break.

Just after half-time Pirates midfielder Ado Thomas was forced off through injury and Nyetimber struggled to get going. The superb Jones made a number of saves keeping the score at 2-0 but he couldn’t prevent the third after another great save fell to the feet of Woolston, who prodded home.

Pirates face top side AFC Chichester this Sunday.

PIRATES: Jones, Carter, Hamm, Tribe, Williamson, Thomas, Bishop, Griffin, Cox, Ludlow, Cooper. Subs: Wyatt, Palmer.

Elmer 4 Hunston CC 1

Division two

Elmer claimed their first league win of the season with a first-half four-goal blitz at Mill Road. The hosts were ahead as early as the second minute when skipper Alex Peach prodded home following great work by James Ford. Hunston were thwarted by a tremendous save from keeper Steve Nanson.

Elmer extended their lead in the 12th minute when Matt Hope finished a chance created by younger brother Tyler.

Jamie Greenhill made it 3-0 with a free-kick which took a deflection past Steve Galloway.

Peach claimed his second of the match in the 37th minute.

To their credit Hunston completed the first-half scoring with a well-worked free-kick routine following a robust challenge by Neale Watts.

A bad tempered and goalless second period saw both teams collect a yellow card as referee Pedro Waithe struggled to retain control.

The win doubles Elmer’s points tally after their three previous fixtures ending in draws.

Avisford Sports 3 Elmer Reserves 2

Division three

The home team set up camp in Elmer’s half with throw-ins and corners and their first goal came through a goal kick that bypassed the midfield and fell to Warren Morley to crash home from 20 yards.

Elmer should have got back in the game when, after good work by Dan Bailey, they were awarded a penalty. But player-manager Jack Davis saw his well-struck spot-kick brilliantly saved.

The second half began with Elmer flying out the traps and Shane Rapley beat the offside trap to score after a good ball by Sam Pullen.

Joe Ansell was replaced by Liam Embleton and Elmer got their second through Rapley when great vison from Steve Hyde allowed him to crash the ball into the top corner.

Carl Lawrence kept Elmer in the lead with a string of saves.

Avisford pulled level when a long set-piece struck the top of the post, hit Jon Kent and rolled along for a simple tap-in by Brian Barnard.

Kent was booked and tempers flared further when Avisford got what proved to be the winner. Another long free-kick found the top corner but the referee missed a pulling-down of keeper Lawrence, leaving the reserves outraged.

Seeing a strong penalty appeal go against them and throwing four up front in the last ten minutes, it left the reserves wondering how they didn’t get at least a point.
