The striker marked his return to the club he played for nearly a decade ago with the opening goal in Rye’s 2-0 Sussex Senior Cup second round victory at home to Crawley Down Gatwick.

Central defender Nathan Russell doubled Rye’s advantage after 10 minutes and they might well have gone on to win by a greater margin against a side which plays its football one level higher up the non-league pyramid.

Elsewhere tonight, Sussex County League Division Two outfit Little Common conceded a late goal to lose 2-1 at home to Division One team Ringmer in the same competition.

Common got off to a positive start and Jared Lusted gave them the lead with a low drive from Adam Smith’s pass. Ringmer enjoyed a lot of the play as the first half wore on, but Common survived a couple of scares to remain in front at the break.

The second half was fairly quiet until Ringmer levelled in the 69th minute when Jack McLean pulled the ball back for substitute Ben Watkinson to drive into the net. Ringmer hit the post and crossbar before Seb Saunders stabbed home a 90th minute winner from a corner.
