One of Ringmer’s poorest performances

Ringmer continued their league campaign, after several matches had been postponed following the recent downpours.

Unfortunately, Ringmer produced one of their poorest performances of the season so far, against their lowly League opponents.

Lancing started the game with more purpose and threatened on several occasions, with Alex Howell and Ryan Waterman prominent in their attacks. They deservedly took the lead after 14 minutes when, after a lapse of concentration from the Ringmer defence, they let in ex-Ringmer striker Dom Shepherd to stroke the ball in to the net.

Ringmer struggled to get their passing game going, due to the heavy pitch and this resulted in long ball tactics. This nearly paid off on one occasion when Seb Saunders found himself clear through, but delayed his effort and was thwarted by the lancing defenders.

Ringmer did eventually draw level after 32 minutes, when young Jordan Stubbings slotted home after Louis Pople’s strike rebounded off the keeper. Not many chances were created for the rest of the half, which turned into a dour midfield battle.

Ringmer came out in the 2nd half with more energy and attacking down the slope, created more chances. After 53 minutes they took the lead from young Stubbings again, who latched on to a perfect through ball from Dan Bolwell and coolly chipped the keeper.

This should have been the sign for Ringmer to press home their advantage and they should have scored a third when a lancing defender handled in the penalty box and conceded a penalty. However, Seb Saunders’ effort was a poor one and he missed the target. He was left holding his head in his hands, to the delight of the Lancing followers.

This penalty miss inspired Lancing and they showed more belief, with Alex Howell becoming more of a danger. After 86 minutes his speculative 20 yard effort somehow creept inside the post, taking the keeper by surprise and worse was to follow. In the 92nd minute a Lancing clearance fell into the Ringmer half and a tussle between Sherriff and Howell ended with Howell striking home from 15 yards, giving Lancing the points.
