Pelling: We’ll block out crowd

Rye United won’t be intimidated by the anticipated big crowd at Kings Lynn Town on Saturday.

That’s the view of accomplished young goalkeeper Josh Pelling, who says he “can’t wait” for the FA Vase quarter-final in west Norfolk.

Pelling said: “The older players like Ramo (Scott Ramsay) and that have played in front of bigger crowds, but to be fair I don’t think it matters too much. It might be a bit daunting when you first walk out, but you don’t think about it during the game.”

The 19-year-old has been on the substitutes’ bench in front of larger attendances for Brighton & Hove Albion’s first team, but has never actually played in front of as many as the 2,000 or so expected to pack into The Walks.

“I think we can win it,” he continued. “It’s going to be hard and I think it will be our toughest game yet, but we’ve had hard away draws every game in the cup so far. It’s always better to come out as underdogs because there’s not much expected of you.”

Rye have won seven matches to get this far - all of them away from home - and are just two steps away from playing at Wembley Stadium in a final of a competition entered by 549 teams from all over the country.

The full article and a comprehensive preview of the match will appear in Friday’s Rye Observer.
