Plenty of spice to local derby

There promises to be plenty of extra spice to the derby between Westfield and Bexhill United on Saturday.

The local rivals will meet at The Parish Field with Westfield defender Lee Wood having just become assistant manager at Bexhill and Westfield striker David Pugh the subject of a seven-day approach from Bexhill.

Bexhill were jointly managed by Darrol Parris and Jamie Podmore - two men who spent many years at Westfield - until Podmore resigned last week due to ill-health.

Parris subsequently assumed sole charge and wasted little time appointing Wood as his assistant. Experienced defender Wood rejoined Westfield last summer, but injury has prevented him featuring as a player.

Pugh, pictured playing for Westfield against Bexhill last season, was Westfield’s 32-goal leading scorer in 2010/11 after joining from Bexhill. One of his 10 goals this term separated the teams in September’s reverse fixture.

Both sides go into the game on the back of good away wins last weekend, with Bexhill winning 2-0 at Wick and Westfield triumphing 3-1 over Mile Oak.

Mid-table Bexhill are five places and seven points better off than Westfield in the Sussex County Football League Division Two table. Kick-off is 2.30pm.
