The right-back has impressed in his four games on loan from Swansea, the latest being a 1-0 victory at Wycombe last night.

Initially signed for a month to fill in while Danny East was out with an ankle ligament problem, the Welshman has proved his worth to Barker.

Now with East suffering what the Blues boss has described as a setback in his recovery, Alfei is required to stay on longer at the club.

His displays also warrant an extended spell.

And with the 21-year-old’s loan set to expire in the next few days, Pompey are in talks with Swansea to extend it for the rest of the League Two campaign.

Barker said: ‘We are trying to keep Daniel, with a bit of luck until the end of the season.

‘He has been excellent, he has been fantastic.

‘Him and Wes on the right-hand side with the amount of work they get through is fantastic.

‘Danny East isn’t fit yet and had a bit of a setback so while Daniel is doing well and enjoying it let’s try to keep him.

‘His delivery is great, he makes good decisions and he’s not bad in the air for his size as well.

‘Initially it was for a month, we thought Danny East was going to back in that time.

‘But he has come in, fitted in well, bought into what we are trying to do, while his attitude is fantastic, so we will be exploring that in the next 48 hours.

‘At the moment we are not expecting to do anything else in the transfer window, unless something major happens in the next 48 hours.

‘Our main aim now would be to try to get Dan tied up as quickly as we can.’
