‘If we win and I don’t score it’s honestly fine.

‘But we’ve been bought to deliver on the big occasions, so it’s pleasing when we do that.

‘I get judged on goals and assists. I’ve weighed in with a few assists but I haven’t scored.

‘So it’s an important goal, and pleasing to give us a goal to break the deadlock and allow us to build.’

Bennett felt the quality of Pompey’s performance was everything Cook has been trying to impress on his players this season.

Accrington, a decent passing team themselves, couldn’t live with the energy and tempo set.

Bennett felt his team produced football to silence strong opponents.

He said: ‘I don’t want to be disrespectful but I think we passed them off the park.

‘They are a good passing team but we made them look very average.

‘As a team performance I can’t speak highly enough of it.

‘It’s fantastic for us and psychologically going to dampen them.

‘That kind of football is something we’ve strived hard for. It’s come together here in a great result.’
