The Reds, looking to bounce back from cup defeats against Millwall and Gillingham, fell behind on the 39th minute at Vale Park, when Cullen found the net from close range after being found by Devante Rodney.

Port Vale, who haven't lost on the opening day of a league season for 16 years, doubled their lead on the 66th minute when Cullen grabbed his second of the game via a rebound, after an initial shot from Tom Conlon was deflected.

Crawley mustered nine efforts on goal, and enjoyed the most possession, but were unable to find a way back into the game.

The Reds return to The People's Pension Stadium next week to face Scunthorpe United, who drew 1-1 at home to Newport County this afternoon.
