Price calls for realism

Rye United manager Scott Price has called for some realism at the football club and believes the team is over achieving in the league.

The team came in for a fair amount of criticism on the club’s own website forum following the FA Vase defeat at Amersham Town on Saturday and Price went on there himself to defend his players.

He told Observer Sport: “There needs to be a little bit of realism around the club. We’re not going to win the Vase with all due respect to the players we’ve got. Even the Peacehaven sides of the late 80s and early 90s didn’t get anywhere near it.

“We had a massive turnaround (of players) this year. The size of our squad isn’t great and to improve the squad is very difficult because players are not happy if they’re sitting on the bench.

“I think there’s too much pressure on the players in the Vase, especially from the club. It shouldn’t be put on the players; it should just be put on me. The way they played Saturday they did look a bag of nerves and you’ve got 20 people in there (after the game) absolutely distraught.

“I still think we’re over achieving in the league - I don’t care what people say about the players we’ve got - because we’re conceding too many goals.”
