Price: Players so close to history

The Quarterboys have a chance of winning the Sussex County Football League Division One title for the first time in the club’s history.

Rye are also 90 minutes away from winning the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the first time since 1968 and are through to the semi-finals of the John O’Hara League Cup.

Price said: “I’m trying to get it through to the players how important it is now. They’re so close to making history. Those players won’t get that chance again whatever they do, even if they move on to better things.”

Top-of-the-table Rye remain six points clear of second-placed Lancing having played an extra match, but Three Bridges are now up to third and are just 11 points off the pace with five games in hand.

“Three Bridges are under a bit more pressure than we are because of the amount of games they’ve got,” Price went on. “But because we’re top, everyone’s looking to beat us. It’s a scalp isn’t it.”

Rye’s last seven league matches include three games at home to bottom four sides, a local derby with Sidley United, and trips to fourth-placed Pagham, Bridges and a Selsey side who they will also face in the RUR final.

First up tomorrow (Saturday) is a visit from a fourth-bottom Worthing United side which has drawn at home to Rye and Bridges this season. Kick-off is 3pm.
