Price: Three-way title fight

Scott Price believes Rye United are one of three contenders for the Sussex County Football League title.

With the Quarterboys now more than a quarter of the way through their Division One programme, their manager considers Pagham and Redhill to be their rivals for top spot.

Price said: “You’ve got Lingfield in there as well, but from what I’ve seen, us three will be the teams to beat as such. It’s hard to say because Redhill normally blow up, but I think they’ll be strong all year.”

Rye head the way at present having won eight and drawn three of their first 11 matches, but second-placed Pagham, who are yet to drop a point from eight outings, are only three points behind with three games in hand.

Seventh-placed Redhill are 14 points behind Rye, who took advantage of Pagham’s cup commitments to go back to the top on the back of an 8-1 demolition of Selsey last weekend, having played five fewer fixtures.

“On our day I fancy us against anybody in our standard of football,” continued Price. “I know Selsey got a bit of a hammering Saturday, but I still don’t think we’ve properly clicked yet.”

Easily the division’s leading scorers, Rye are now averaging more than three goals per league game in light of Saturday’s goal bonanza and have scored two or more in 12 of their 13 outings in all competitions.

Price went on: “If you look at the goals we’ve conceded (15 in 11 league matches), I suppose in a way teams will feel they can get at us. But I can’t see anybody in the league having better attacking options than we’ve got. We’ve just got goals about us from all over the pitch.”

Having been without a midweek game for the first time this season - something which Price welcomed, Rye return to action today (Saturday) when they welcome Hassocks to The Salts for a 3pm kick-off.
