Price upbeat over Rye title chances

Scott Price is remaining positive about Rye United’s Sussex County Football League title prospects.

The Quarterboys’ hopes suffered a major blow last weekend when they lost 3-0 away to early season pacesetters Pagham, while rivals Three Bridges and Lancing both won.

Rye manager Price said: “It’s taken it out of our hands again, but I’ve got to stay positive. I’m still optimistic, hoping someone will do us a favour.”

Long-time Division One leaders Rye are now just two points ahead of second-placed Three Bridges having played two extra games and three above third-placed Lancing having played one more match.

“Mathematically it’s possible,” continued Price. “All we can do is win three games. If we win our games and they (Bridges) win the league, fair play to Three Bridges.”

Although Rye possess the best goal difference of the top three, the potential final day shoot-out away to Bridges will be academic if the Crawley side wins its next four games.

Bridges played AFC Uckfield in the John O’Hara League Cup final today (Good Friday) and it’s not until Easter Monday that the three title hopefuls will return to league action.

Rye will entertain 11th-placed local rivals Sidley United hoping for a repeat of their 2-0 victory in Boxing Day’s reverse fixture. Sidley are also playing tomorrow at home to Redhill.

Having missed the Pagham game feeling unwell with tonsillitis, Scott Ramsay was then taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital early this week with his whole throat seized up and unable to swallow.

Price said: “We’re not getting the luck at the moment with injuries. I’m hoping he’s fit (for the Sidley game) because we missed him big time on Saturday. He and Rhodesy (Phil Rhodes) will walk straight back into the side.”
