Rain and Redhill ruin Chichester City's momentum

The momentum has gone from Chichester's recent run of good form in division one of the Sussex League, with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Redhill on Tuesday following the postponement of Saturday's home clash with Crowborough.

Redhill’s win at Oaklands Park kept them level on points at the top of the table, while City’s fourth-bottom position remained unchanged with none of the teams below registering any points.

Chichester had their work cut out trying to deal with Redhill’s pair of lightning-fast wingers, but despite the visitors’ domination they secured victory only with a couple of soft goals.

On 24 minutes they gained a free-kick in midfield and Ryan Briggs’ wide long-range delivery landed perfectly into the goalmouth for stalwart Jon Difford to nod into the net.

Any dangerous efforts from Chichester were generally confined to set-pieces, but it was too much of a tall order to stage a comeback after Redhill extended their lead on 54 minutes.

Jimmy Davies threaded the ball through to Chris Gregson, who beat the offside trap, and when the onrushing Dan Roberts missed the ball it was a simple finish for 2-0.

City’s best chance to hit back arrived in the 73rd minute when Aran McCarthy ran through towards goal, but from a tight angle his shot fell wide.
