Ray: Bad day at the office

Sean Ray admitted Hastings United endured a very bad day at the office in the 4-0 defeat at Metropolitan Police yesterday (Saturday).

The U’s got off to a dreadful start by conceding three goals in the first quarter of the Ryman Football League Premier Division match and their misery was made complete by a penalty soon after half time.

United player-manager Ray said: “It was a very bad day at the office. We got punished for starting so poorly. We were out of it before we even got into it.

“To be fair to Met Police they were a very good side, certainly the best side I think we’ve played this season so far. They’ve got some very good players in there, but we were the creators of our own downfall the way we defended.”

Although never one to look for excuses, Ray felt the effects of the previous week when United won away to Bishop’s Stortford in the FA Vase and then came from behind with 10 men to beat Enfield Town in the league took their toll on the players.

“We looked very tired and we didn’t look sharp,” he continued. “There’s been a lot of emotion in the past week and it’s taken a lot out of us, but that’s not an excuse for performing that badly.

“Maybe the preparation wasn’t as good as it could’ve been and I will hold my hand up to some of the responsibility for that.”
