Ray - last day defeat sums up season

SEAN Ray has said Hastings United’s final day defeat at home to Metropolitan Police summed up their season.

The U’s failed to take their chances in a dominant first half display before conceding twice in the second period to go down 2-0.

The loss meant they finished in the final position of safety of 18th in the Ryman Premier standings.

“We’ve been on top in so many games but haven’t scored and come off losing. That sums up the season for us,” said the Hastings player-manager.

“That’s the difference between us and other teams - when other teams are on top they score but when we’re on top we don’t score. We had so many chances.”

Billericay Town were crowned champions the previous weekend and the race to see who will go up with them will be decided this week when the play-off semi-finals pit AFC Hornchurch against Bury Town and Lowestoft Town against Wealdstone. The winners will meet in the final at the weekend.

Ryman Premier final standings: Billericay Town 85pts, AFC Hornchurch 82, Lowestoft Town 82, Wealdstone 75, Bury Town 75, Lewes 73, Hendon 72, Canvey Island 71, Cray Wanderers 68, East Thurrock Utd 62, Kingstonian 61, Metropolitan Police 60, Wingate & Finchley 59, Concord Rangers 57, Margate 54, Carshalton Athletic 52, Harrow Borough 47, HASTINGS UTD 47, Leatherhead 41, Aveley 27, Tooting & Mitcham Utd 27, Horsham 14.
