Rebels beat by fellow promotion-chasers Folkestone

WORTHING Football Club slipped up in the Ryman League Division 1 South play-off race this afternoon (Saturday) with a 1-0 defeat at home to Folkestone.

Rebels, who started the day fourth in the table, level on points with their fifth-placed visitors, were sunk by a solitary Roland Edge strike in the second half.

After both sides had a penalty saved in the first half, Paul Kennett denied by Jack Delo after six minutes, before Rebels’ Alan Mansfield superbly saved James Everitt’s spot kick 17 minutes later, it was Edge’s lob over Mansfield that separated the two promotion chasers.

Rebels rarely threatened an equaliser as Folkestone went through the motions to grind out the win, while they had the chance to seal it in stoppage time when Darren Smith hit the bar.

Before soon after a string of bizarre decisions was capped when Jamie Brotherton picked up his send yellow for an apparent dive, and was dismissed.

Folkestone’s win sees the leapfrog Worthing into fourth, with 64 points, while Rebels are fifth on 61 points, ahead of sixth-place Maidstone only on goal difference after their 4-1 win at Walton & Hersham.
