Rebels need extra-time to Down Crawley in FA Trophy replay

Ryan McBride and Tom Lawley’s goals in the added half hour saw Rebels through the preliminary round of the competition and bag £2,000 prize money.

This came after a thrilling 3-3 draw at Woodside Road on Saturday, but although it took an unwanted replay, Rebels now travel to Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division side Bashley on October 22 for the first round.

Worthing manager Chris White said: “We got the job done in the end. It was a frustrating game, but I felt we played quite well overall.

“We pretty much controlled it, but lacked that little bit of quality in the final third, which is unlike us.

“It was a shame that the one meaningful bit of quality took until extra-time, and minutes before and it would have been done in the 90. But it’s a good result for us and a few more coffers for the club.”

That moment saw McBride nodd home his eighth goal of the season from a delightful Steve Metcalf cross just a minute into extra-time.

Lawley, who had been heavily involved in the match but lacked the final product, then produced a another magic moment.

Cutting inside his man, he fantastically curled home into the top corner to seal the result for Rebels.

Crawley had only really looked dangerous from setpieces during the intial 90, but Rebels carved out the best chances as McBride hit the bar in the first half, and Darren Budd and Luke Gedling went close in the second.
