Red cards and a shootout - Centenary Cup clash has it all

Nine-man Petworth survived the sendings-off of player-manager Paul Jefford and goalkeeper Ian Fumagall to progress to the next round.

Lavant dominated the first half with Ryan Seacombe proving a handful up front. They took a deserved lead midway through the half when their captain headed home a Matt Hine corner.

Seacombe looked like he had added a second but was ruled offside.

Petworth rallied well in the second half and top scorer Rob Levett equalised with 15 minutes left.

Jefford had a golden chance to put them in front but missed when yards from goal.

The dismissal of Jefford for dissent swung the balance back in favour of Lavant and they grew in confidence. But Petworth held on.

A few minutes into extra-time the hard-working Dave Torode was replaced by veteran ex-first team manager Adie Konieczny and they managed to take the game to Lavant.

But in the second half of extra-time, Fumagall raced out of his goal to challenge Seacombe and appeared to clip him. Seacome went down and the ref had to send off Fumagall.

Petworth captain Rob Torode donned the gloves and with eight tired men and a 44-year-old sub who hadn’t played for six years, they looked up against it. But Torode was inspirational in goal and John Pafford and Tom Carter were immense in central defence.

Levett, Konieczny, Jaysi Wells, Rhys Burrows and Dan Warren scored for Petworth in the shootout to make it 5-5. Torode brilliantly saved the sixth Lavant penalty which gave Tom Carter the chance to win it for Petworth. His penalty was saved but Torode made another fantastic save and Pafford stroked the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Sidlesham 5 Newtown Villa 1

The sunshine brought out plenty of spectators for Sidlesham’s first home fixture.

Sids got off to a good start with an early goal by Paul Barnes.

Great teamwork was rewarded by two goals in the last five minutes of the first half from Dan Bassil.

Five minutes into the second half Bassil completed a hat-trick.

Sidlesham’s management made two substitutions to prevent injuries, and brought on Darren Dennis and Tom Bailey.

Villa pulled a goal back on 60 minutes but eight minutes Barnes scored his second.

Watersfield 1 Uni of Chichester 5

The university continued their unbeaten start with an impressive win against league new boys Watersfield.

They took an early advantage through Scott Dormer’s low shot.

Dormer took his tally for the season to four as he stroked home a penalty after James Sandford had lured the home team’s keeper into a rash challenge.

The uni were further rewarded when Sandford’s cut-back was met by Kenneth Hagan whose shot fell to Danny Potter, who converted.

Sub Dan Baker soon made his mark, latching on to a Sandford through-ball to chip the keeper.

A mix-up in defence gave Watersfield a chance of a consolation. But the result was put beyond all doubt when Declan Hartigan went through to add the fifth. The uni remain unbeaten.

Lavant Reserves 2 Wittering Utd 3 Sussex Junior Cup

Early Lavant pressure paid off as full-back Greg Ockwell scored from long distance.

Wittering levelled in a goalmouth scramble and took the lead in dubious manner. A long ball saw the Wittering striker seemingly control the ball with his arm, but the ref waved play on, allowing the striker time to put hjis team ahead.

Ross Lines went on a mazy run only to be brought down in the box. Lines dispatched the spot kick. But a mix-up between the Lavant defence and their keeper provided Wittering with the winner.
