Rivals edged out on theirown ground to leaveHassocks in driving seat

Hassocks ladies opened up a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier Division with a hard fought 1-0 win at closest rivals Bexhill on Sunday.

Chances were at a premium throughout but the first fell to Bexhill before Hassocks started to find their feet and pose a threat. Top scorer Katie Harding went close towards the end of the half and after the break the visitors really upped their game in attack.

They went ahead on 50 minutes when Lottie Arnold did well to bring the ball inside and feed Harding, whose early strike from the edge of the box tunned the home keeper.

The visitors seemed determined not to relinquish their hard-earned lead and although Bexhill applied plenty of pressure and had strong penalty appeals turned down, Hassocks held on well and could have added to their lead in the closing stages.

It was an outstanding team performance in which every player played a huge part. Keeper Sarah Chappell looked solid throughout, the back four were outstanding as a unit and individually, and the midfield never stopped running.

This Sunday they entertain impressive South Park side at The Beacon.
